Now you can communicate securely over email with little or no effort.
Ciphire Labs in Munich, Germany has just released “software that aims to
make encrypted email communications simple enough for even computer novices
to use,” according to an article in New Scientist. The Ciphire home page is
informative and describes the program’s operation in simple terms.
I downloaded the program yesterday for testing on my Windows XP Home box
running Mozilla mail. Installation is simple: just answer a couple of
questions, provide a passphrase (which is used to generate the encryption
keys for you), and start sending. By default, the program will check to see
if the recipient is a Ciphire user and automatically encrypt the mail if he
is. If the recipient does not have the Ciphire program, it will add a
digital signature to your message.
