NT Service Launcher installs as a service Windows NT and launches other applications

http://www.alixoft.com/software/ntslaunch.htm

The package includes the service itself and the service manager to specify command lines the service must execute. It's pretty self-explanitory but should be used by persons experienced with NT service installation and configuration. This is provided as-is. It is not guaranteed to work or be free of defects. Further, there will be no support available. Use it at your own risk. Note: This application does not handle service dependencies. It will wait for each application to start. Each command line must be a "real" command line (like type in at a prompt).

POBS replaces user-defined functions, constants and variables with a MD5 key of 8 characters

http://pobs.mywalhalla.net/

POBS replaces user-defined (NOT predefined) functions, constants and variables with a MD5 key of 8 characters. (It doesn't use MD5 keys of 32 bytes, which is standard, since that would increase the size of your sourcecode). 8 bytes seems enough to give each functions or variable its unique name. MD5 is not reversible. The first letter of the new functionname is a "F", of a variable a "V" and of a constant a "C" The function with name MakeImageHtml is replaced by Fee2c1bdc The variable $ImgText is replaced by $V1d9d94a6 The constant USERDIR is replaced by C389a367e

Dynamic thumbnail creation

http://slim.climaxdesigns.com/tutorial.php?section=slim

While reading over the comments about HoverBox on Sonspring I figured I would have a go fulfilling some of the responses. Make sure you have read that tutorial first and understand what's going on there. One response was what would happen to the layout if the images had different orientations. I suggested clipping the images using php to create thumbnails, and so I looked into my toolkit and pulled this out. The original script actually created the entire page with form values for the user to enter. I broke it down to its basic components and made a function of it.

Hoverbox Image Gallery – CSS Image Gallery

I recently finished reading CSS Mastery, and think I’ve finally got a good understanding of how absolute and relative positioning (fail to) work in Internet Explorer. I have been tinkering with this bit of code since yesterday afternoon, helping out a designer friend with his client’s site. However, we decided to go a slightly different route for their gallery. So, I pass it on to you with the hope that it proves useful. Basically, it’s a super light-weight (8kb) roll-over photo gallery that uses nothing but CSS…

Lightbox – script used to overlay images on the current page

http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox/

a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. It's a snap to setup and works on all modern browsers. Example To make sense of it all, check out these examples. Click on a thumbnail or text link below: left to right: Lokesh, Jess, Brian, and Steph image #1 the handstand incident image #2 w/caption Benefits Lightbox JS is a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox/ Places images above your current page, not within. This frees you from the constraints of the layout, particularly column widths. Keeps users on the same page. Clicking to view an image and then having to click the back button to return to your site is bad for continuity (and no fun!).

Firefox Extension Backup Extension

http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/febe/febe.html

FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up — It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files. Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers. FEBE backs up your extensions, themes, and (optionally) your bookmarks, preferences and cookies.

Nice titles – showing a partially-transparent link summary when dragging a link

http://www.kryogenix.org/code/browser/nicetitle/

Nate over at webgraphics talks about a new feature he'd like to see in Safari: that titles on links should be shown in the rather pretty way that Safari currently shows dragged links: The Safari browser showing a partially-transparent link summary when dragging a link That's rather nice, that. Of course, it doesn't need browser support. Try mousing over, or tabbing to, some of the links on this page: you'll see the same effect. It's all done with CSS and a little bit of JavaScript.

Nifty Corners Cube are a solution to get rounded corners without images

http://pro.html.it/niftycube/

Nifty Corners Cube are a solution to get rounded corners without images, and this third version is build by three main components: * A javascript file, named "niftycornerscube.js" * A CSS file, named "niftycorners.css" * The javascript calls specific for the pages Now we're now ready to look at the first example: it's a div with big rounded corners thanks to Nifty Corners. As I said before, the CSS file it's added automatically by javascript. In fact, the only reference to an external file in the example is the following: Regarding the third point, as is the javascript calls needed for the page, the code for the example is the following: In bold I've reported the part of the script that depends on the page, and that is the call for the function Nifty. This function is the core of the whole library, and receives two parameters that are the strength point of the script. Parameters have to be specified between quotes and separated by a comma. The first parameter is for the CSS selector that targets the elements to round, while the second parameter is for options for default cases could be omitted. Let's see them in depth.

Vanilla – good web forum php application
With Vanilla we wanted to break the mold created and followed by just about every other forum on the web. We sat down and thought about what we liked, and more importantly, what we didn't like about web forums. We wanted emphasis on the discussions rather than the statistics. We wanted to stop using MSN or AIM to send secret messages to other forum members; We wanted to be able to save the common searches. Basically, we wanted the thing to work for us instead of against us. Most importantly we wanted it to be free and we wanted it to run on just about every web server out there. So, Vanilla is a PHP / MySQL solution that is 100% open-source. You can take it and alter it and use it free of charge. The GPL is your friend. Here are a few more of Vanilla's features…

Apex is a powerful tool that lets you Monitor and/or prevent deletion of files

Apex is a powerful tool that lets you Monitor and/or prevent deletion of files. it can also let you move deleted files to a special folder. Other features include running invisibly, prevent file deletions on start up and recording the name and directory of the deleted file as well as the action performed on it, the of the action and the user that requested the action, to a log file. NOTE: Deleting files to the Recycle Bin is not deleting but its simply moving a file to a special windows folder called Recycle Bin. Real deletion of files occurs when you SHIFT-DELETE a file or when you removes a file from the Recycle Bin.

TiddlyWiki – portable weblog

A web technology that is, in my opinion, underrated but still going on along on the 'net, is that thing called "wiki". In a nutshell, a wiki is a user-editable website and online collaboration can easily be done because it has been designed to be edited by its readers.

WinBinder: The native Windows binding for PHP

http://www.hypervisual.com/winbinder/

WinBinder is a new open source extension for PHP, the script programming language. It allows PHP programmers to easily build native Windows applications. Click here for more information. Some key benefits * Large installed base of PHP programmers. * No compiling and linking steps necessary: just code and run. * Access to the vast range of existing PHP functions and extensions, including databases, graphics, web functions, XML, PDF, and much more. * A small set of WinBinder functions encapsulates many complex aspects of the Windows API and makes programming for Windows an easy task. * Provides 100% native Windows classes and controls. * Interfaces directly to the Window API. This means fast execution, no extra libraries and no installation required. * Supports both procedural and object-oriented programming models. * High performance, compares favorably to most scripting languages. * Produces standalone applications that can be easily installed and removed with no reboot. * Small footprint. A simple Windows application, complete with the PHP runtime and SQLite extension, is smaller than 700 kB (zipped). * A database-independent framework allows easy coding (no SQL knowledge is necessary) and smooth integration with the WinBinder code. * No database server required if using SQLite. * Does not need to use to the Windows registry, but may use it if necessary.

Phalanger PHP for dotNET

http://www.php-compiler.net/

The Phalanger is a complex solution giving web-application developers the ability to benefit from both the ease-of-use and effectiveness of the PHP language and the power and richness of the .NET platform. This solution enables developers to painlessly deploy and run existing PHP code on an ASP.NET web server and develop cross-platform extensions to such code taking profit from the best from both sides. Compatible with PHP 5.0, the object model in Phalanger enables to combine PHP objects with the .NET ones. It is possible to use a class written in PHP from a .NET application or even to import a .NET class (written for example in C# or Visual Basic .NET) into PHP scripts provided that this class respects the PHP object model implemented in the Phalanger. The Phalanger is the only existing PHP compiler which produces .NET Framework MSIL bytecode.

Visual AJAX – Tersus Visual Programming Platform employs AJAX

http://www.tersus.org/about/visual_ajax

The Tersus Visual Programming Platform employs AJAX techniques "under the hood", simplifying the creation of web applications with a rich, responsive user interfaces. Tersus uses a single, visual language for defining user interface, client side behavior and server side processing, eliminating the need to master multiple technologies and tools. The visual model is executed on the server or inside the browser as appropriate, eliminating the need to master different languages (JavaScript , Java) and complex client/server integration techniques. With Tersus you will get two major benefits: 1. You use the same language for client side and server side processes. 2. The development is 100% visual – the application is defined using visual diagrams instead of code. For a simple example, take a look at the Tree4Notes application, which contains a split-pane with a tree display of the notes hierarchy on the left, and the contents of the currently selected note on the right. See how the content of the page is update without a full reload.

Oooo event:Selectors for Prototype

http://borkweb.com/story/oooo-eventselectors-for-prototype event_selectors

My article on the Separation of Layout and Logic touched on a key point of heavy Javascript use in an Ajax rich environment…the need for separation of Javascript code – namely events – from the HTML. Behaviour was my suggested CSS/Javascript event selector framework. Behaviour is a stand-alone event framework. You can use it regardless of whether or not you are using Prototype (or some other Ajax/Javascript library) – which is pretty cool. But…if you are using Prototype there is a lot of code duplication between the two libraries. Luckily, Mir.aculo.us has brought event:Selectors to my attention which is causing me to sing a different tune! Justin Palmer, event:Selector's creator is crediting Behaviour for the idea, but he's has what Behaviour has done a few steps further.

JMount – Map folder to virtual drive letter

http://home.megapass.co.kr/~woosjung/

JMount allows you to create virtual drives by mapping your favorite folder to a drive letter. The virtual drive behaves as a real hard drive. It makes you save time to browse for a folder with a long file path, and then provides you prompt access to the folder. For example, the folder "C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersDocuments" could be simply mapped to drive "Z:".

Cobian Backup  – multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files

Cobian Backup is a multi-threaded program that can be used to schedule and backup your files and directories from their original location to other directories/drives in the same computer or other computer in your network. FTP backup is also supported in both directions (download and upload). Cobian Backup exists in two different versions: application and service. The program uses very few resources and can be running on the background on your system, checking your backup schedule and executing your backups when necessary. Cobian Backup is not an usual backup application: it only copies your files and folders in original or compressed mode to other destination, creating a security copy as a result. So Cobian Backup can be better described as a "Scheduler for security copies". Cobian Backup supports several methods of compression and strong encryption.

Sandboxie – Isolate application from system

Protecting your Freecell statistics using Sandboxie may be a good idea when a less qualified player comes along, but you will probably want to play most of your games outside the sandbox. On the other hand, you may want to run your Web browser inside the sandbox most of the time. This way any incoming, unsolicited software (spyware, malware and the like) that you download, is trapped in the sandbox. Changes made to your list of Favorites or Bookmarks, hijacking of your preferred start page, new and unwanted icons on your desktop — all these, and more, are trapped in and bound to the sandbox. You could also try a new toolbar add-on, browser extension or just about any kind of software. If you don't like it, you throw away the sandbox, and start again with a fresh sandbox. On the other hand, if you do like the new piece of software, you can re-install it outside the sandbox so it becomes a permanent part of your system. Sandboxie intercepts changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox. Sandboxie traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.
