It was written to solve several problems that I had with currently available analysis packages. A vast majority of them were written in Perl or some other scripting language, and took forever to run. When you install Inno Setup it will offer to associate itself with ISS files. These are script files that Inno Setup uses to create the final re-distributable Setup.exe. Inno Setup has three parts: the Integrated Development Environment better known as the IDE, the compiled product (Setup.exe), and the un-installer.

The IDE loads when you first start Inno Setup. At first glance, it's a fancy notepad. You can choose to open an example script file, start with a blank one, or open one you are working on. Example1.iss which is included is a perfect starting point. It is easy to learn how the program works. The IDE includes auto syntax highlighting; this helps a lot when you are first learning the program. As a plus, the Help menu works like 'classic windows help' to make searching easy.

Once you have completed all the information for the script, press F9 to compile the Setup.exe. Setup.exe is written into a sub-folder called Output which is automatically created in the folder that houses the ISS Script file.

The next step is to run Setup.exe and let it install the product. Once you've installed your product, the installer writes two un-install files to the root of the installation and adds a handful of settings to the registry. This automatically generates a un-install option under Add/Remove Programs. The un-installer is just as sleek as the installer and works great. You can, of course, write your script to not have a un-install feature. In short, Inno Setup's 'footprint' is very small.

In our tests, Inno Setup compressed and compiled 41 files and 4 sub-folders across 87 lines of Inno Script code in 20 seconds. Score: We give it 5 out of 5 coffee cups!

Similar to Windows 9x/Me, the registry files in an NT-based system can become fragmented over time, occupying more space on your hard disk than necessary and decreasing overall performance. You should use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files and optimize registry access. The program works by recreating each registry hive "from scratch", thus removing any slack space that may be left from previously modified or deleted keys.
