FoxTorrent 1.0 – Firefox BitTorrent Add-on

Red Swoosh (acquired by Akamai for $15 million earlier this month) released v1.0 of FoxTorrent today. This is a fully functional BitTorrent client for Firefox that works cross platform (Windows, Mac, Linux) and has a very cool additional feature – the ability to stream files as they are downloading.

This is no Azureus (my BitTorrent client of choice), but it does the job and saves time by allowing you to manage torrents directly from the browser. I tested it on a few (non-copyright infringing, of course) files and it worked great on the standard BitTorrent functionality. Streaming just didn’t work, although with the way the BitTorrent protocol breaks files into pieces and reconstructs them in a non linear way means you may have to wait until the file is mostly complete to even begin streaming. I’ll try it again once the files are nearly complete.

Just unzip the file and run the executable. Give it the site/area url, list name, and view name, supply the necessary login credentials, pick which type of XML you want (list data or list items) and – voila – instant XML that can be cut-and-pasted into your favorite text editor.

This utility is especially useful if you try to delete/move/open a file and you get one of the following error messages:

    * Cannot delete [filename]: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.
    * Cannot delete [filename]: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

When you get one of these error messages, OpenedFilesView will show you which process lock your file. Closing the right process will solve this problem. optionally, you can also release the file by closing the handle from OpenedFilesView utility. This application simply reads the given directory and it's subdirectories, and produces .htm file basing on a given template. The result file can be used to print out the contents of the folder, or as a sitemap of your website.

Note: this program can't read your website online, it also doesn't understand external URLs, like: www.konradp.com, it only reads and exports a folder.

Also, this application was created for myself, then I only added this help doc. and a few other things, and published. This means it is not very strongly tested, but it worked for me fine, so I assume it will work for you too.

So, there are two ways you can use this program: creating sitemaps (for websites) and simply getting a contents of a folder.
