Less MSIerables – Extract the contents of an .msi File

http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive/2005/06/02/2449.aspx

I'm not a fan of Microsoft's .msi installer files. They're slow, they don't let me pick start menu groups, and they are a major overkill for lots of tiny program installations that I use where a simple rar file (okay zip would work too) would be much more suitable. So sometime last year I spent a night hacking together a simple tool that lets me take these miserable .msi files and extract their contents. Since others may find it useful too, I figured I'd put it out here.

It works from the command line, has a simple form that lets you extract files and view msi tables. Let me warn you the first time you run it, it will add an "Extract" item to the right-click menu in explorer when right-clicking on .msi files (the added registry entry is made at \\\Registry\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Msi.Package\shell\Extract\command\). Thanks to the WiX project for the handy utility classes for working with msi files and awesome reference on msi internals.

http://vmtoolkit.com/blogs/announcements/archive/2006/11/20/vmdk-to-vhd-converter-available.aspx

We have made our first tool; the VMDK to VHD file converter, available on our downloads page. This is a file conversion tool it will not make any modifications to the source image such as uninstalling VMTools etc… but it will leave your source VMDK un-touched so you can continue to use it.

We use it test and move VMWare images and appliances into Virtual Server and Virtual PC. Please use it and abuse it, let us know if you have any questions or problems in the forums. The only pre-requisite is .NET Framework 2.0. We do not have a linux version at the moment.

Pre-Conversion Steps can be found at http://searchservervirtualization.techtarget.com

Note: I have tested the conversion myself and it worked flawlessly.

WhoCrashed-reveals the drivers responsible for crashing your computer

http://www.resplendence.com/whocrashed

Whenever a computer running Windows suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often though about is a hardware failure. In reality, most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, most computers running Windows do not show a blue screen unless they are configured to do so. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

WhoCrashed shows the drivers which have been crashing your computer with a single click. In most cases it can pinpoint the offending drivers which have been causing misery on your computer system in the past. It does post-mortem crashdump analysis and presents all gathered information in a comprehensible way.

Normally, debugging skills and a set of debugging tools are required to do post-mortem crash dump analysis. By using this utility you do not need any debugging skills to be able to find out what drivers are causing trouble to your computer.

NodeXL is an Excel 2007 flowchart template plus class libraries

http://www.codeplex.com/NodeXL

Formerly know as Microsoft Research released .NetMap

NodeXL is an Excel 2007 template for viewing and analyzing network graphs, along with a set of .NET Framework 3.5 class libraries that can be used to add network graphs to custom applications.

A network graph is a series of vertices (sometimes called nodes) connected by edges. See this Wikipedia article for an overview of network graphs.

Here is a sample network graph created by NodeXL. It shows an individual's network of friends within Facebook.com:

In addition to the Excel 2007 template, the source code includes a standalone desktop application for viewing network graphs. The application reads graph data from either a Pajek file or a simple edge-list text file. The degree of graph customization is much more limited in the desktop application than with the Excel 2007 template.

he Excel 2007 template and the desktop application display graphs using a custom Windows Forms control that can also be used in other applications. In fact, the template is just a Visual Studio Tools for Office 3.0 wrapper around a stack of reusable, prebuilt class libraries.

The Windows Forms control is one of several graph "visualizers" that are packaged in a Microsoft. NodeXL.Visualization assembly. There is also a Microsoft. NodeXL.Adapters assembly for reading and writing graph data in various formats, a Microsoft.SocialNetworkLib assembly for analyzing social networks, and a Microsoft. NodeXL.Core assembly that implements the low-level vertex, edge, and graph classes. The framework for a Microsoft. NodeXL.Algorithms assembly is also provided, although most of the graph algorithms are still work items as of December 2008.

The class libraries are documented in a help file created with NDoc. Search for the NodeXLApi.chm file in the class libraries.

Important Note: You may see nothing but empty topics when you attempt to view the NodeXLApi.chm file. To fix this problem, which is due to a security restriction in Internet Explorer 7, right-click the chm file in Windows Explorer and click the "Unblock" button on the General tab.

DAEMON Tools Lite-CD/DVD emulation

http://www.daemon-help.com/

DAEMON Tools Lite is a lightweight and powerful application for CD/DVD emulation. It allows running games from backup copies as if the original disc were inserted.
In order to run backup copies you need to create appropriate image files of your original cd/dvd discs with software creating such appropriate images (e.g. DAEMON Tools Pro ).

DAEMON Tools Lite is a virtual DVD-ROM emulator based on a SCSI miniport driver. It emulates maximum 4 DVD-ROM drives and works with CD/DVD images created by many burning programs. It is great on notebooks without a physical CD-/DVD-ROM drive or to save akku power and speed up CD/DVD access. In opposite to other CD-/DVD-ROM emulators DAEMON Tools Lite doesn't use a proprietary container format. The advantage is that you can burn the images you're using with DAEMON Tools Lite right away or just test an image before burning it to see if it was created correctly. DAEMON Tools Lite works with most image formats. Moreover it has a special feature to make physical (burned) backups of your CD/DVD images when it is possible. It supports MDS format (MDF/MDS Files) and RMPS Media! It's also great if you want to save Power on your Notebook.

HFS (HTTP File Server) to send and receive files

http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/

You can use HFS (HTTP File Server) to send and receive files.

It's different from classic file sharing because it uses web technology to be more compatible with today's Internet.

It also differs from classic web servers because
it's very easy to use and runs "right out-of-the box".

Access your remote files, over the network.

It has been successfully tested with Wine under Linux.

FLV Extract-extract audio from FLV files

http://moitah.net/

Extracts video and audio from FLV files without decompressing or recompressing. The video is saved as AVI (H.263/FLV1 and VP6/VP6F) or raw elementary stream (H.264/AVC). The audio is saved as MP3, AAC (with ADTS headers), or WAV (PCM).

NOTE: If you simply want to convert FLV to AVI including audio, the FLV Input Plugin for VirtualDub (see below) is most likely a better choice. FLV Extract currently writes out separate video/audio files which you would have to join. Also, FLV Input Plugin is able to maintain synch in variable framerate videos by inserting drop frames. However, it doesn't yet support H.264 or AAC.

NOTE: The AVIs will not play unless you have the right decoders. ffdshow-tryouts can decode FLV1, VP6F, and H.264; make sure they're enabled in its configuration dialog.

NOTE: The extracted MP3s may appear to have an incorrect duration in your audio player. This is because FLV Extract doesn't generate a VBR header, but the files are perfectly valid nonetheless. To add a VBR header you can load an MP3 in foobar2000, right click on it, go to Utils, and click "Fix VBR MP3 Header".

Flash Drive Reminder

http://www.bgreco.net/reminder.php

This is a small, freeware utility that pops up a reminder if you try and log off Windowswithout removing your flash drive. I wrote this because I got tired of going backto computer labs because I had left my flash drive plugged into a computer.

This program adds an entry to the AutoPlay dialog that pops up when you insert
a flash drive into a computer. (Screenshot) If you select this entry, Reminder will launch.
What happens next depends on which version you download.

Monitorix-lightweight server system monitoring tool

http://www.monitorix.org/

Monitorix is a free, open source, lightweight system monitoring tool designed to monitorize as many services as it can. At this time it monitors from the CPU load and temperatures to the users using the system. Network devices activity, network services demand and even the devices' interrupt activity are also monitored. The current status of any corporate Linux server with Monitorix installed can be accessed via a web browser.

It has been designed to be used under production UNIX/Linux servers, but you can use it to monitor embedded devices, or in your laptop or even in your Linux box at home as well.

Initially all its development was created for monitoring Red Hat, Fedora and CentOS Linux, so this project was made keeping in mind these distributions. Since 0.8.0 though, is easier to port it to other Linux distributions and even to other UNIX systems like FreeBSD.

Monitorix is an open source project and, just like any other open source project, anyone can contribute with its own time and knowledgements.

You are very welcome to join to the project.

There are many ways of contributing to this project. You do not have to be a Perl guru or spend much time. Coding is only one aspect of open source. Just install the software and test it. If you encounter any error, please notify it. If you think there are some parts that could be improved, please share your ideas.

Snarl is a notification system for Windows

http://www.fullphat.net/index.php

Snarl is a notification system inspired by Growl for Macintosh that lets applications display fancy messages on the screen with the minimum of fuss – no complex code, libraries or other middleware required.

Unlike other forms of Windows notification, Snarl does not hijack the current focused window, nor does it force the taskbar to be visible. Notifications can either be cancelled by clicking on them, or left to disappear automatically if ignored for a period of time. Messages are extensible too: Snarl will notify the application which displayed the message if the user clicks it.

Probably best of all is that Snarl can display several messages at any one time; new messages are simply displayed alongside existing ones.

An application can display any number of messages, and can update the content, icon, and time the message appears for of any particular message at any time and explicitly remove the message if required.

If you're a developer of an application you can include Snarl support in your application with almost no effort at all – Snarl uses Windows window messaging functionality to show and hide notifications, making it accessible to any programming language from low-level pure C to high-level Visual Basic 6 or .net-based environments (and everything in between) and there is sample code for most languages available too.

You can also display Snarl messages using a command line tool and there's even a Python API available. There are no licence requirements; your app does not have to be Open Source and we don't expect any form of payment from you either – although a donation would be nice…

Snarl also supports small modules called extensions. These run within the Snarl process space and can be used to add Snarl functionality to existing applications without the need to modify the application itself. A number of handy extensions are included with Snarl and you can find more here.
